Little Bugs

I was finally able to get out today and headed to Cheesman Canyon.  The fish were there and some of them were even eating!  Fishing the Canyon isn't always easy, especially in the winter when the bugs are super small.  It always amazes how watching fish and fishing to them in unconventional ways can result in a few hook-ups.  I won't get into it here, just that it worked better than nymphing!  Bugs of the day were #24 midges of various colors, nothing in particular.

  1. It looks like you had a real productive day. The bugs you caught with the camera are very interesting. I really see the gray that I don't fish much. I usually go with black or browns. The fish look healthy and not scared too much. Good sign for this year. Thanks for sharing, Jerry

  2. Always amazes me, even after I've been fly fishing for a couple of years now, that trout will take a really little nymph. They have better eyesight than I have.

    1. Mark-I like to say that we eat lots of fries and it had the same affect as fish eating lots of small bugs. We both get fat enough if we eat enough of them!

  3. Cheesman can be rough in winter, that's for sure. Awesome fish Juan, and a great post overall!

    1. Thanks Scott. It was rough for about half the day and then it was fun for about an hour or more and then rough again.

  5. Looks like a lot of fun! Most of the waters I fish that have good winter midge hatches have been blown out for the last 2 months, so it is nice to know that someone is getting on on some good small bug fishing...

  6. Wow those are crazy small flies. Were they weighted?

    1. Matthew-I used a standard nymph rig set up so, yes there was weight to get them down, just not on the flies themselves.
