It's that time to start throwing Hopper/Dropper rigs. Not like I haven't for the last 6 months, but now is the time. To start it off, I completed a new Video on the Chubby Chernobyl, a fly you will certainly hear more of this summer. It's taken off recently and I wanted to put it out there for you. Also, I will put up the Hopper Juan and the Amy's Ant. With these 3 flies, there is no reason why you shouldn't have an epic summer! Enjoy.
Great post, Juan! I like how you do your Chubby. I have been using MFC Phoenix Dubbing and it is a pain in the butt to dub. The fish like it but it's a bear to work with. How do you like the difference between 2mm and 3mm foam? Pros and cons?
ReplyDeleteScott-I thought you might like this! I use the 3mm for the #6 & 8s and then drop down to 2 mm for 10 & 12s. If you can get away with thicker foam, why not right? The foam thickness will not affect the pattern, especially in the larger sizes. 3mm foam on a #12 isn't the best idea. The Pheonix dubbing works good, but it is hard to dub. I like the color of the SLF, but you can use almost anything. I also use Watershed on all my flies as I think it makes a huge difference in helping the fly stay higher, longer.
ReplyDeleteFirst off, The Juan was fishing great last week. I was catching 20 to 30 fish per day. I did very well and enjoyed my favorite river for my annual retreat. The dark colored Hopper Juan's were fishing well early in the morning till about mid day. I also had some killer Toon Hoppers, purple bottom, light brown top and black legs. There is nothing like seeing a fish take a big foamy fly. Went back to the room about noon. Made a sandwich, got out of the sun, took a nap for an hour. We would hit the water again about 1600 till dark. It was a fabulous trip.
ReplyDeleteI wish I had some of the Chubby Chernobyl's. I will be tying some up this week in size 10 and 12 for small streams. What is your favorite color of foam and dubbing combination? I will be using some Arizona Simi Seal for my bodies.
Thanks for posting this fly, I can't wait to use it.
Thats awesome Juan! I am never able to tie foam flies for some reason...
