Ooops forgot the fly, it's what I call a red eyed bass bandit. Red dumbbell eyes, rabbit strip for the tail, dubbing for the body and rubber legs. I'm pretty generous with the dubbing, but all colors seem to work, when I tied them in black sometimes instead of dubbing I will use peacock hurl. It gives the fly a thinner profile, I think it's just something different to the fish but it still looks buggy, the fur feel helps the fish hold the fly longer. The dumbell eyes combined with the floaty rabbit fur give the fly a fall rate that is not too fast or slow but great when twitched in the water. Bass seem to love it.

ReplyDeleteI've been enjoying tying the hopper juan lately with a twist. I added a 'hoppicator' loop a la Mickey Weir to the hook before tying the fly. This lets you use the hopper like an indicator with droppers, and still be able to adjust for depth.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite fly to tie and fish is a stonefly nymph. My fav not only because it fishes well all year long, but also easier for my fat fingers to tie. Good scissors are a great tool for trimming & making my efforts look "buggy". My current favorite recipe? Variations of Charlie's Flybox biot golden stone.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite will always be a classic Woolly Bugger. My personal favorite has always been a #8 3XL, olive body with grizzly hackle and black marabou.

I tie a variation of the traditional BWO. In the mid-to-late spring throughout the summer and fall, a size 16 works for me. Black 8-0 thread. Three moose-hair fibers. Olive dubbing, brushed-out well in the thorax area with about five wraps of grizzly hackle (a couple of extra wraps of hackle to give the fly a more 'buggier' appearance.) Give it a little head, whip finish, add head cement, and as soon as the cement dries, douse it with lots of floatant, let that dry, then douse it again. These can also be tied with an extended body.

As of late my favorite fly to tie has been my damsel in distress. Marabou and bead extended body with a short marabou body. Never had the chance yet to try it out but will get to soon. My favorite fly to fish is a little thread midge pupa, that's not very fancy. I like fishing it not because it is fun to tie or looks good, but because it makes me laugh every time a pull a fish on the little guy. Recipe is in Modern Midges, but I add some Clear Cure Goo instead of Sally Hanson's
ReplyDeleteMy favorite fly to tie and use is my own little twist on the ever popular Sparkle Dun. Instead of Z-lon for the tail I use several (8-10) CDC fibers from some of the scrap feathers that I have already used part of for something else. Then I like to use a smooth biot wrapped body rather than a dubbed body for a nice thin, and segmented profile.

Favorite fly to tie at the moment is a Mike Tucker Scud. Its the most productive Scud I have fished, and the weave that is used is simple and looks awesome. However good ostrich herl (thick and wide enough) is hard to find.

In a return to the old school I've renewed my love for the hare's ear. Tie it in a bunch of sizes and colors and you don't need another nymph.

ReplyDeleteBlack AP nymph. The first nymph I ever tied, learned the pattern from its creator, the late Andre Puyans, at a class in his store at Pleasant Hill, California. I think the AP is pretty well known. There are a bunch of variations described in a magazine article that Andy wrote (I have a copy somewhere). The AP is a good generic nymph. Andy said the black one (moose and beaver) is the most productive.

My favorite fly is the griffith gnat. I like it in a size 16. It is a great fly on small streams. I also love to use it on the Juan. I am also a fan of big foam flies. I am burning up my vice getting ready for my usual retreat to the Juan.

My favorite to tie right now (it changes periodically) is a leech pattern I got from guide Jeff Lyon. Using micro squirrel honkers in olive, brown and black, I've begun adding an egg pattern to the front of the streamer hook using bright orange diamond midge braid. I looks so real in the water that it's a bit scary.

ReplyDeleteMy favorite fly is the zebra midge size 18 and under. This is great, easy to tie fly and should be in any clinch river fly anglers fly box.
