Salmonflies

They are here and I have been busy tying away, trying to fill the fly boxes. Too bad they are not for my boxes. I have a buddy that is going to do a 3 day float down the Gunnison and the trip is next week. I tied up a dozen Foam Stones as well as a new pattern that I came up with based on the Hopper Juan. I guess you could call it the Salmon Juan, but that's pretty lame. Maybe the Gunnison Gorgess. Heck I don't know what to call it. I guess I have to wait to hear how it did before I officially name it. I also tied some nice drown or sunken stones, but I don't have a photo of them. I think that those may get the most attention on the trip. We shall see.

Rouge Foam Stone # 6

I should be orange, not dirty orange. Dang Sharpie!

The Gunnison Gorgess?
#6

A mess of stones.

Dirty Stone.

I've seen this before. What's that other hopper that poses this way called?

Leggy and plump. Just the way I like them.
Who writes this crap?

  1. Man, your hoppers and salmon flies are awesome!

How do you cut the foam so well? My foam comes out all choppy.

  2. Choppy never works! I use the cutters from River Road Creations. I use the chernobyl tapered cutters for the bodies and for the wings, I use the RRC stonefly cutters, but for the stones, I used the Montana Fly Co. wing cutters. They are a bit bigger in size than the RRC cutters, but everything is bigger in Montana. Thanks for the comment and let me know if there is something you want to see and I will try to get it out there. No promises though.

  3. Very nice Juan. If only I could make time to try to get in on some salmonfly action. Sounds like so much fun!

  4. Juan,
Who makes the foam that you tie those with? I want to try fishing the Gunnison this year, but I am tied up until the first of July. Will the salmonflies be done by then?
    Thanks,

  5. Elton,

I used foam from both Rainey's and Larva Lace and I liked the Rainey's the best. The L.L. worked ok, but would prefer Rainey's. As for the Salmonflies, I think that buy July, they would be gone. Doesn't mean use couldn't try, but I think the fish would be keyed onto something different by then, maybe caddis.

  6. Is it the evazote or crosslink foam? I bought some black evazote that I really like and some camel evazote that I hate. It is hard to work with and doesn't float very well.
    Thanks,
    Elton

  7. The camel sucks. I just found some that I have and it sucks. I use evazote.
